Getting Psyched Without Losing Your Edge on Game Day
By Kieran Kennedy
To help ensure peak performance, you need to properly prepare yourself mentally with a final emotional tune-up that includes breathing exercises, a review of the goals you have set in advance and a full mental and visual rehearsal of the game plan. Before this can be accomplished one has to clear their mind by letting go, closing their eyes and get ready to move to the next phase of preparing for competition. You should feel so confident that you expect the unexpected. Now is the time to move toward your perfect timing and energy zone - PTEZ period .
A PROVEN PTEZ RITUAL
1. Begin with some breathing exercises
Imagine your lungs have 3 parts: a lower, middle and upper section. Now close your eyes and imagine that you are just going to fill up the bottom third of your lungs as you breathe in. Do this by imagining that you are pushing out your diaphragm, stretching it to the maximum and opening up your abdomen. Next imagine filling the second third of your lung cavity by expanding your chest cavity and raising your rib cage and chest to their maximum capacity. Finally fill the last sector of your lungs by raising your chest and shoulders.
2. Next do a short imagery and visualization session done with familiar scenes and images from prior successful events
3. Use positive self-talk and positive affirmations to help yourself get ready. Remind yourself that you have been here before, you are strong, you are a warrior and that you’re ready to go and feel that you are at the absolute top of your game
4. Remind yourself of a personal saying this is the cue for you to do your best. I like “in the zone” to help remind me that I am truly in the PTEZ.
