What's New
NCAA Championship
It had been a year since a Huron staff member had captured the NCAA Frozen Four Hockey Championship but this year we saw one of our own do it again. This time it was extra special because it came from a man and a program that has deep Huron connections.
Huron’s founding father Ron Mason is the current Athletic Director and former Head Coach of Michigan State. Rick Comley, was a former Lake Superior player, then assistant coach for Ron Mason before embarking on his own career starting at his alma mater. It was magic to watch as Rick’s Spartans captured the Frozen Four College Hockey Championships in a 3-1 nail biter decided with only 18.9 seconds remaining in the game.
Along the way both men felt the wrath of impatient Spartan fans as Rick molded a team and teaching philosophy that took longer than expected after taking over for Ron in 2002 especially considering he was replacing the Legend of coaching. Mason held tight with his personal selection and conviction and the expected became reality last Saturday night in St Louis.
In the words of Coach Comley, “I’m never going to get to that club, the 900 club. There’s only one person in that club, and I think he’s the best to ever coach in college hockey,” Comley said. “To be able to do now what he’s done in this same program means a lot to me, so I thank him very much.”
Spoken like the true professional Rick Comley is today. Having had the opportunity over the past 25 years to work with both of these men all over North America you know the true friendship and respect each has for the other. Your Huron brothers couldn’t be prouder of you both.
