What's New
The Bennett Brothers
By Paul O’Dacre
What do the brothers Bill, Curt and Harvey Bennett all have in common? They all played in the NHL at some point during their hockey careers. In the case of Harvey and Bill, both attended Huron Hockey School at the request of their NHL parent clubs back in 1979 and 80 respectively.
Twenty-seven years later, after speaking with Bill Bennett at the recent NARCE conference in Chicago, I learned that most of the information he passes onto students in his instructional programs at the Cranston Veteran’s Memorial Ice Rink were learned from his days at Huron Hockey School.
“Back then the Hartford Whalers sent me along with 75 other NHL players to participate in [the Huron] Pro Camp. It was there that Ted Sator and Ron Mason taught me the correct way to skate incorporating the proper body mechanics. Almost to a man everyone in the camp came away a better skater and trust me, we needed to in order to survive at the NHL level. We had guys like Ray Bourque, Marc Crawford, John Marks and Ed Hospodar at that camp, talent ranging from average to great,” stated Bennett. “They were the pioneers of skating long before it was called power skating. I owe a lot to those guys and the kids that I have taught along the way have had a chance to learn hockey the Huron way as well.”
Ted Sator remembers Bill as a long legged rugged forward who listened intently all week through an intense camp. “We had some of the toughest guys the NHL has ever produced but they listened so intently in video analysis and during the skating portion of the camp. I always told the players that if they could just take one or two of our ideas with them and implement into their game they would become better players. If we could carve half a second off their acceleration time it could become the difference between a scoring chance or no chance at all,” says Sator.
In the end it was all information that helped over 700 players advance to the NHL level - some stars, some roll players and others living a dream. Join us this summer and let us help you shape your game at a camp near you. Check us out at: www.huronhockey.com or call toll free at 877 487 6611.
